Our Mission
The mission of Hawaii’s Lifeguard & Water Safety Fund is to provide
environmental education, coastline sustainability, and ocean awareness
education programs. We do this in order to make our citizens aware of the
importance of maintaining a safe & sustainable environment for the future of the
Hawaiian Islands. We also focus on the importance of ocean and water safety by
providing ocean and water safety tips through a free publication called Hawaii
Lifeguard Water Safety & Rescue Magazine.

providing ocean and water safety tips through a free publication called Hawaii
Lifeguard Water Safety & Rescue Magazine.
The magazine is used to educate residents and visitors in Hawaii.
Hawaii’s Lifeguard Water Safety & Rescue Magazine includes safety tips for Hawaiian waters in
English and Japanese, maps of beach hazards, rescue stories, amateur surf, kayak and paddling
contest articles, and environmental tips for Hawaii’s oceans and shores. The purpose of our
magazine and our water safety programs is to reverse the unfortunate trends regarding
accidental drowning’s in the state of Hawaii. Hawaii has the second highest rate of accidental
drowning’s in the nation, which also denotes the 5th leading cause of accidental death in Hawaii.
Our environmental projects are used to educate children on the importance of maintaining a
sustainable eco system in our oceans, as well as the importance of properly taking care of the
land for our future. HLWSF organizes and funds school ocean safety and sustainability programs,
designed for elementary aged children, grades K-6th. The ocean safety and sustainability
program is a 1-hour program, consisting of a 20-minute video about safety in Hawaiian waters.
This is followed by a 20-minute presentation of beach and pool safety signs done through visuals,
and a follow-up Q&A opportunity. The last 20 minutes is used to demonstrate lifeguard rescue
equipment to the students, followed again by Q&A opportunities. This allows the lifeguards,
instructors and students to interact and develop a better understanding of the importance and
relevance of water safety.
HLWSF can also provide student activity books and teaching manuals for teachers upon request.
